Popular Electronics was a magazine aimed at electronics hobbyists, which became the best-selling electronics magazine in the world. Popular Electronics averaged 409,344 copies in its final year of publication.
In October 1982, the magazine was renamed Computers & Electronics.
Popular Electronics played an enormous role in the development of personal computing. It is considered the trigger for the computer revolution when, in January 1975, it featured the launch of the Altair 8800 computer on the cover. This led Harry Garland and Roger Melen to develop the first peripheral devices for the Altair 8800 computer, and the Cromemco company was founded. Paul Allen and Bill Gates wrote the first software for the Altair 8800 computer, and the Microsoft company was founded.
