The company was amazed by the sales of its kits. It soon sold pre-assembled units as well.

It is considered the first successful commercial computer.

The product's pricing made it the first affordable computer:

  • Kit: US $439 (equivalent to $2,200 today)
  • Assembled: US $621 ($3,100 today)

The computer bus designed for the Altair became a de facto standard known as the S-100 bus.

The first programming language for the machine was Altair BASIC, written by Bill Gates and Paul Allen, who would later found Microsoft.
