Created under the direction of Dr. Wendell Sander, it was intended as an office computer, with a typewriter-style keyboard (the Apple II only supported uppercase letters) and an 80-column display.
However, overheating problems, resulting in limited space between the boards for cooling airflow, made it Apple's first commercial failure.

These problems were later corrected with a new version that corrected the board's design flaws, including lower power consumption, wider traces, and better-designed chip sockets.

The 14,000 units of the original Apple III sold were returned and replaced with the revised model.

Apple discontinued the Apple III in October 1983 because it violated FCC regulations, and the FCC required the company to change the name of the redesigned computer, resulting in the Apple III+ model, but the resulting bad reputation swung the market toward the IBM PC.
