The MSX standard cartridges were a more expensive system than the cassette tapes used by the 8-bit computers of the time, but they were more reliable and faster.

The MSX system was proposed by Microsoft, through the Ascii Corporation, to unify 8-bit home computer platforms. Sony, Yamaha, Mitsubishi, Sanyo, and eleven other companies later joined.
Unfortunately, the standard only caught on in Japan, the Netherlands, Spain, and much more.

In 1985, the hardware specifications were expanded with the MSX2 standard.
Among the most important companies producing MSX2 computers are Sony, Sanyo, Panasonic, Mitsubishi, National, Philips, Talent, Telematica, Toshiba, Yamaha, and Daewoo.
