In 1971, Alan Shugart developed a flexible disk coated with iron oxide at IBM to facilitate the constant updates of its computers, thus creating the concept of the "floppy disk."

The first floppy disks could store 80,000 characters (the equivalent of what an operator could type in a full workday), and IBM sent them to its 370 mainframe customers for equipment upgrades.
And they soon replaced the noisy card punches that had been in use until then.
