William Reddington Hewlett, the co-founder with David Packard of the Hewlett-Packard Company (HP).
Bill Hewlett earned a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering and computer science from Stanford University in 1934 and his Ph.D. from MIT in 1936.
During his time at Stanford, Hewlett met David Packard while conducting university work.
He and Packard began discussing the creation of a company in August 1937, which was formally established on January 1, 1939.
He served as president of HP from 1964 to 1977 and chief executive officer (CEO) from 1968 to 1978, when he was succeeded by John A. Young.
He remained chairman of the executive committee until 1983, and subsequently as vice chairman of the board until 1987.
In 1966, he and his wife founded the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation.
In 1995, he received the Lemelson-MIT Prize for lifetime achievement.
