Consumer microcomputer keyboards were far from matching those of professional models because, for cost reasons, they generally used only a simple plastic membrane (as in the ZX-81) possibly topped with rubber keys.
The Oric-1 keyboard was described as semi-mechanical because its keys were made of rigid plastic, which was an undeniable improvement, but still less practical to use than a real mechanical keyboard.
The Oric-Atmos solved the Oric 1's number one problem with its mechanical keyboard. It also fixed some bugs in its ROM that affected cassette loading as well as the built-in Basic (the Microsoft-produced Tangerine Basic was upgraded from version 1.0 to 1.12), but this would prove to be a double-edged sword, as certain Oric-1 programs no longer worked on the Atmos.
Aside from the appearance of the case, the rest of the machine is almost identical.
